Matthew Slagle was born and raised in Poway, Calif. a suburb of San Diego. He first got interested in journalism as a Sophomore at Poway High School (PHS).
He was a staff writer his junior year on The Iliad staff then one of the Sports Editors his senior year.
The second semester of his senior year he had an internship at a local independent television station, KUSI-TV, in the sports department.
After he graduated from PHS in 2010 Slagle first attended Palomar Community College in the Fall semester where he became Sports Editor then in the Spring semester he was the Managing Editor along with his responsibilities as the Sports Editor.
His internship at KUSI turned into a position on their high school football show the Prep Pigskin Report. He was a field producer for the 2010-2011 football season, covering games all over San Diego.
In the Spring semester he got an internship at the North County Times covering high school sports and working on the desk inputting scores.
Slagle received Honorable Mention for a sports story he wrote at the Northern California Journalism Association of Community Colleges (JACC) conference.
In October of 2010 he stared writing for the local Patch website, poway.patch.com as a freelance sports reporter for PHS sports, in April of 2011 he became the sports columnist for the website.
His second year at Palomar he was named the Multimedia and Online Editor. He was also the beat writer for the football team, traveling to their games and attending practices providing game coverage and features on individual players.
He got another internship at the San Diego Union-Tribune in the sports department working the desk, copy editing articles and creating headlines.
In October Slagle won first place in the sports writing competition at the JACC conference in Southern California.
In December of 2011 he was named the Editor in Chief of The Telescope for the Spring 2012 semester.
His future plans include transferring to a four-year college at the end of the 2011-2012 school year and major in journalism.
Once he transfers he looks to become a beat writer for a sports team writing for the school paper.
After he obtains his major he wishes to write for a major publication and become a nationally respected beat writer for a professional sports team.
But for now you can find him covering a variety of different high school sports while improving his ability to report on games and expand his repertoire as a journalist.
