There is a reason a picture of Alex Morgan is the wallpaper for my lock screen on my iPhone. Yes, it is partially because she is pretty, but also because she is one of the best women soccer players under 25.
If it wasn’t for Abby Wambach insanely late header for the tie against Brazil, the story of the 2011 Women’s FIFA World Cup, Morgan would have been the major story.
Morgan never started, but was substituted into all of the USWNT’s games and was tied for the 4th most points in the tournament.
The great thing about Morgan is that she has scored a majority of her international goals after the 80th minute.
Think Tebow Time, minus the religion and average ability, everybody knows that when the 80th minute rolls around the opponents exaused defense is going to have to make an attempt at defending the fresh and young legs on a talented forward.
Think Big Papi circa 2003, when every other at bat was a walk-off home run.
Sure, it would be great to see he get more playing time. But the anticipation from sitting around for 80 minutes waiting to watch something glorious happen is well worth it.
Most importantly Morgan is a great soccer player, and yes, good looking. But it will be fun to see her improve in the coming years.
How many days till the 2012 Summer Olympics?
